Fistula

The fistula (also called an arteriovenous fistula or AV fistula), which is created by joining an artery and a vein under the skin of the arm. When the artery and vein join, the pressure inside the vein increases, strengthening the walls of the vein. The strengthened vein is then able to receive the needles used in hemodialysis. The AV fistula typically takes about 3 to 4 months to be ready for hemodialysis. The fistula can be used for many years.
