Temporary catheter

A temporary catheter is an angioaccess or vascular access generally made of thermosensitive polyurethane, which consists of two lumens. Its purpose is, as in all vascular accesses for hemodialysis (HD), to allow dialysis therapy to be carried out in patients with kidney disease. As its name says, "temporary" is the main indication for its use. Different clinical guidelines such as KDOQI and societies such as the SVS (Society of Vascular Surgery) suggest its use only and exclusively in patients in whom it will be used for short periods, up to a week, and only in hospitalized patients. The access routes can be as in other angioaccesses; internal jugular, subclavian, translumbar and femoral muscles, the latter being reserved for bedridden patients and for use for no more than 5 days.
